ARTificial Intelligence

In March 2021 Andrea Bonaceto entered uncharted territory by co-creating digital art with Hanson Robotics’ humanoid icon, Sophia. The resulting drop, ARTificial Intelligence, invited collectors to witness a genuine dialogue between human imagination and machine cognition. Bonaceto first painted a series of expressive portraits of Sophia and her “family.” Those canvases were then fed into Sophia’s neural networks; the robot autonomously re-interpreted each image, outputting visuals that merged Bonaceto’s colour-rich language with AI-generated patterning. The centre-piece, “Sophia Instantiation,” was a 12-second MP4 that morphs from Bonaceto’s initial portrait into Sophia’s self-rendered digital painting. Offered as a 1/1 NFT plus a hand-painted physical print, it fetched US $688,888 at auction—making history as the first artwork jointly authored and sold by a human artist and an autonomous robot. Beyond the headline sale, the collection included limited-edition drawings such as Little Singularity and Real Dr Ben Goertzel, each carrying Sophia’s algorithmic “signature.” Every token underscored Bonaceto’s conviction that AI can act not merely as a tool but as a co-creator, expanding the frontiers of authorship and originality. “We’re moving toward a paradigm where robots and humans work together in the creative process,” Sophia declared in the project’s announcement—a sentiment Bonaceto echoes throughout his practice. ARTificial Intelligence positions Bonaceto at the vanguard of technological art, demonstrating how programmable NFTs can capture an evolving collaboration between organic and synthetic minds—an exploration he continues to push in subsequent bodies of work.
